  • Native Speaker of English and other foreign languages or those who possess equivalent ability. One must have strong verbal and written English communication skills (any nationality welcome but must have a clear accent).
  • In Principle, foreign nationality is required.
  • Visa: Valid working visa (student or working holiday visas not accepted). Must have a validity until the end of March 2026 or applicant is able to renew period of stay. Visa support is not provided.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree (in any field)
  • Must have an interest in teaching English as foreign language, desire to be involved in education, and suitable to be involved in education at schools.
  • Must NOT have a criminal record.
  • Must not have been dismissed due to disciplinary action as an employee of the Tokyo  Metropolitan Government for at least two years.

Preferred / Advantageous 

  • Applicants with teaching degrees, higher degrees, certifications, and experience are advantageous but not required.

Job Description

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Board of Education is now accepting applications for Part-time Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) for the upcoming school year (April 2025 - March 2026).

The types of schools range from Senior high-school, Junior High School, Schools for Special Needs Education, Elementary, or any combination.  The geographic locations to request employment are separated into regions: 23 Ward area, East and West Tokyo, so there is flexibility in selecting your preferred location and schedule.

For those unfamiliar with ALT work, ALTs teach alongside the Japanese teachers of English in the primary and secondary education schools.

Job Details

  • Assistance in English and other foreign language classes at Tokyo Metropolitan schools. This includes preparation and review before and after classes.
  • Assistance in lectures that take place during long-term holidays. This includes preparation and review before and after classes.
  • Assistance in preparation and evaluation of performance tests at periodic examinations.
  • Arrangement of class plans at the start of the school semester.

Employment status

  • Hourly-paid instructor

DIC International has been selected to undertake the initial selection and interviewing for these positions on behalf of the BOE.  Please note that the employment contract will be between the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Board of Education and the individual teacher so you are working directly for the BOE and not dispatched via an agency.

Application process

Please apply with resume and cover letter via JOBS IN JAPAN. Upon successful selection, you will be sent an interview data sheet which asks for more information on your preferred teaching location and availability.

The selection process consists of two parts. In the first stage interview, which is undertaken by DIC International, names of successful candidates are listed on the “List of Candidates” and sent to Tokyo Metropolitan Schools via Tokyo Board of Education.

In the second stage interview, Tokyo Metropolitan Schools contact the candidate who they think can be the perfect match with the teaching plan of the corresponding school and conduct the interview with the candidate.

After the interview with the school is over, Tokyo Board of Education will be responsible for making the final recruiting decision for the candidate as well as signing the employment contract with the candidate.

Please note that being on the “List of Candidates” does not guarantee the recruiting from the school.

東京都教育委員会は、次年度(2025年4月~2026年3月)の会計年度任用職員の外国人英語等教育補助員(ALT)を募集しています。

勤務校の種類には、高等学校、中学校、特別支援学校、小学校などがあり、複数の組み合わせが可能です。勤務地は東京都23区内、東京都東部および東京都西部であり、希望地の域地やスケジュールは柔軟に選択することができます。ALTの職務は、主に日本人の英語科教員と協働で小中高等学校にて英語教育を行うことです。

雇用形態

面接は2段階で行われます。

第1次面接はDICインターナショナルにより実施され、合格者の「候補者リスト」が東京都教育委員会を通じて都立学校に送付されます。

第2次面接では、各学校が候補者の中から学校の教育計画に最適な方を選出し、面接を行います。学校での面接後、東京都教育委員会が最終的な採用決定を行い、候補者と雇用契約を締結します。
