☆Osaka: A Brief Introduction☆

Known as Japan’s Second City, Osaka is often tragically overlooked as second fiddle to Japan’s larger, more infamous capital. But if Tokyo is the somewhat cold, impersonal, New York-esque metropolis of the North, then Osaka would be its laid-back, outgoing, and distinctly quirky counterpart to the South – and many feel that its more casual and friendly atmosphere is more conducive to making friends, chatting with locals, and enjoying the more authentic side of what Japanese culture has to offer.

Situated in the heart of Kansai, Osaka is perhaps most famous for its eclectic culinary heritage. Historically referred to as ‘the nation’s kitchen,’ visitors are often overwhelmed by the enticing smells emanating from the food carts and street vendors lining the city’s neon-lit roads and alleyways, serving up regional specialties like takoyaki and okonomiyaki. It is home to Dotonbori, one of Japan’s most famous dining and lightlife districts, and Universal Studios Japan, the massive amusement park and popular tourist destination. Japanese history enthusiasts will also enjoy visiting Osaka Castle, one of Japan’s most famous landmarks, and Shitennoji, the first shrine ever to be built by the state. Its convenient central location also provides quick access to Kyoto, Japan’s historic and cultural epicenter, and Kobe, Kansai’s scenic city of lights – well within an hour by train.
