 About MY

MY English School (MY) is a growing English school with over 1,200 students, 10 schools, and Yamagata Prefecture’s only English immersion kindergarten.  We are celebrating our 20th anniversary this coming year.

We focus on student-centered teaching and a supportive work culture.  While the majority of our students are kindergarten through junior high school, we also have some classes for high schoolers, adults, and for corporate clients.

Job description:

This is for a salaried position (starting ¥270,000-¥290,000/month) teaching 5 days/week, Tuesday-Saturday.  Most days will have between 5 and 6 lessons.  Weekdays are mostly afternoon and evenings, with some morning lessons at local kindergartens.  Saturdays are usually between 10:00 and 17:00.

Teachers also actively participate in and seek out professional development opportunities, help at school events, and contribute as members of a professional group of teachers with high standards for education.

What MY can offer -

Flexibility:

  • 15 flexible holidays/year
    • We provide 15 days/year of flexible holidays from day 1, plus national holidays.
    • Many schools give the legal minimum (10 days only after 6 months of employment) and/or require some days to be taken at set times.
  • No set office hours
  • Prepare when and where you like.  Many schools have specific office hours, when you must prepare lessons. MY doesn’t.
    • At MY, lessons must be prepared, but you can do it when and where you please.  The focus is on quality lessons, not how long you spend in the office.

Support:

  • Up to ¥200,000 in relocation support
    • We will reimburse your relocation costs, up to ¥200,000.
  • 10 days/year of all-staff full-day training
    • We not only focus on training at the start, but highly value continuing education.  We run our own Expo, where teachers and staff present to each other on what they’re doing, as well as invite speakers from other areas of Japan and even abroad.
  • Apartment and car help
    • We will help you in getting an apartment, car, and other areas that may be difficult for people not fluent in Japanese.

Opportunities:

  • Build skills outside of teaching
    • MY has many teams that teachers can join to influence the school and develop skills.  Teams MY currently has are:
      • Curriculum Development
      • Professional Development
      • Hiring
      • Leadership
      • Marketing
      • 20th Anniversary Events
    • Joining a team includes a monthly bonus and small reduction in teaching hours.
  • Management and promotion possibilities
    • Both Japanese and foreign staff can become managers and/or team leaders at MY.
    • Management and leadership are not for everyone, but MY has no glass ceilings.
  • Professional development
    • We want teachers to develop skills for the future as well.  8 MY teachers have gone on to university teaching.  Others have decided to pursue degrees in education to teach in their home countries after leaving MY.
    • All teachers are members of JALT (Japan Association for Language Teaching)
    • Can apply to become permanent employee—with increased benefits—after one year of employment.

Truly international team:

  • MY currently employs teachers from 11 different countries: Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, and USA.
  • We don’t care what country you are from.  All we care about is that you have sufficient language and teaching skills to teach English at our standards.

Teacher comments:

  • “Even when my school was about 50km away from the closest other MY location, I’ve felt more part of a team than at places where the next location was 5km away.” – Mike Masse (Joined MY in 2010)
  • “Many jobs talk about the need to develop oneself professionally and to learn new skills. MY puts time and money toward ensuring that we do those things.” – Aaron Spooner (Joined MY in 2013)
  • “MY allows the self-motivated teacher many opportunities to try out ideas both in and outside the classroom. If you would like experience in making materials, creating a curriculum, or training new teachers, MY can be a great place to grow those skills, too.”
    – Jessica Takeda (MY teacher from 2015-2020 and now teaching at Tohoku University)

Vetting process:

  1. Submit application and answer questions on education
  2. Online interview
  3. Demo day at a MY location
It’s important for both us to meet you and for you to see us, before making a decision.
  4. Offer of employment
  5. Relocation support
  6. Training
