About IAS

IAS is responsible for RIKEN's international relations and English-language translation support for the administrative divisions of RIKEN headquarters as well as the RIKEN research centers and institutes. IAS is currently seeking an administrative employee to join its translation team as a Japanese-to-English translator and an English editor.

Job description

    • Translating documents from all RIKEN administrative divisions from Japanese to English and editing documents in English.
    • Providing English-language support as necessary for International Affairs Division business.
    • Support for advisory council meetings.
    • Writing for the RIKEN in-house newsletter.

* Administrative Temporary Employees are employed directly by RIKEN to perform RIKEN-specific technological development or administrative duties and have special knowledge, skills, qualifications, and experience necessary to do so. The title of this position does not impact the total potential employment duration specified in "Conditions" below.

Qualifications

    • University graduate
    • Native English speaker
    • Capable of understanding Japanese documents and translating them into English
    • Must be able to communicate in English and Japanese (meetings, conversations, emails, etc.)
    • At least 3 years' experience as a professional translator from Japanese-to-English in a private corporation, university, research institution, or the like is desirable
    • Capable of using email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
    • Proactive and diligent worker
    • Capable of creating effective relationships with co-workers and researchers
    • Cooperative, responsible, and able to work independently as well as in a team
    • Willing to promote the internationalization of RIKEN's work environment

Work location

RIKEN Headquarters 2-1 Hirosawa, Wako
Saitama, Japan

Conditions

Annual contract renewable upon mutual agreement. Total duration may not exceed 5 years, in principle. For persons applying from within RIKEN, total years of employment at RIKEN may not exceed 5 years in total, counting from April 1, 2013. However, employees who have previously worked at RIKEN may be subject to different rules on the period of fixed-term employment. Please refer to the "RIKEN employment duration for fixed-term employees" document for more details if necessary.

    • Hours and days: four days per week/7.5 hours per day, or five days per week/6 hours per day.
      (Hours will be set flexibly between 9:00 and 17:20. Break: 12:00 to 12:50)
    • Days off: National holidays, Saturdays and Sundays, year-end holidays, RIKEN Foundation Day.
    • Paid leave: Annual paid leave (Provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations), and other kinds.
    • Salary: In accordance with RIKEN regulations.
    • Allowances: Commuting allowance, overtime pay.
    • Compulsory welfare programs: Health insurance, nursing-care insurance, employee pension, employment insurance, workers' accident compensation insurance, mandatory membership in the RIKEN Kyosaikai (Mutual Benefit Society).
    • Others: No smoking on site (designated smoking areas available). These and other provisions are in accordance with RIKEN regulations.

Selection method and notice of results
