Job Summary:

As an Accounting Lead at Tokyo Academics, you will play a key role in managing our accounting operations and ensuring accurate financial reporting. You will work closely with the Finance Director and a team of accounting and finance professionals to accurately account for the company’s operations, maintain compliance with financial regulations and provide strategic insights to the organization. Typically, this person will be working at the Tokyo Academics office in Nishiazabu, during our regular business hours (10 AM – 7 PM Japan Standard Time).

What you will work on:

• Accounting Operations: Manage day-to-day accounting activities including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations.
• Internal Controls: Institute processes and create appropriate control structures to help the organization accurately track financial performance
• Financial Reporting: Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to provide actionable insights to leadership.
• Compliance and Auditing: Ensure compliance with local and international accounting standards and assist with regulatory filings.
• Budgeting and Forecasting: Collaborate with the Director to assist in budget preparation, financial forecasting, and long-term financial planning.
• Process Improvement: Identify opportunities for process optimization and implement strategies to streamline accounting procedures.
• Tax Compliance: Oversee the timely and accurate filing of tax returns and ensure compliance with all tax regulations.
• Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with the broader finance team and other departments to ensure the accurate and timely delivery of financial information.
• Team Coordination: Allocate tasks and responsibilities within the finance team to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of accounting and reporting deliverables

Our ideal candidate:

• Is a Certified Public Accountant
• Has proven experience in an accounting role
• Has excellent understanding of financial reporting standards, compliance, and best practices
• Has strong attention to detail and accuracy in all financial reporting and accounting processes
• Has the ability to identify inefficiencies and suggest and implement improvements
• Is able to work well with cross-functional teams, as well as independently, in a remote work environment
• Is proficient in accounting software and familiar with cloud-based tools
• Fluency in English is required; proficiency in Japanese is a plus

Work hours:

• Full-time position (40 hours/week).
• Working in-person from Monday to Friday 10AM to 7PM Japan Standard Time
