Job Description

Could You Be the Heart of Our Teaching Team?

Journeys English, one of Fukuoka’s leading independent English language schools, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Teacher to join our growing team.

As we approach our 12th year of success, we've grown from a single owner-teacher operation to a medium-scale school employing a team of 20.

Over 1,000 students have benefited from the Journeys Way of improving their English communication skills, equipping them for an increasingly international world.

With the recent acquisition of a second branch, we are expanding our teaching team and looking for a full-time Senior Teacher to take on a key instructional role across both locations.

If you are passionate about teaching, thrive in a dynamic environment, and want to make a meaningful impact on students of all ages, we’d love to hear from you!

What We Offer

    • Monthly salary: ¥260,000 - ¥290,000 (based on experience).
    • Performance-based bonus every 6 months.
    • 20 days paid holiday (15 during school holidays + 5 flexible chosen by you)
    • Two consecutive days off per week.
    • Visa sponsorship (current valid work visa required).
    • The opportunity to play a pivotal role in a growing, dynamic company and gain valuable teaching experience.
    • Ongoing professional development through regular training days and observation/feedback sessions
    • Opportunities to expand your skills in curriculum development, team management, marketing, recruitment, media creation, and more!
    • Be part of a close-knit, supportive team of teachers and student support staff.
    • Work closely with our school directors—both foreign and Japanese—who understand the unique challenges of living and teaching in Japan and are committed to supporting our international teachers every step of the way.
    • Enjoy a vibrant social community with regular get-togethers, nights out, and day trips.                         Check out our any of our 150 reviews here.
    • Comfortable, stylish and spacious work environment - no drab grey office building!
    • Relaxed casual uniform of our branded T-shirts and sweaters provided - no tie required!
    • The chance to live and work (if not already) in Japan's fastest-growing city, Fukuoka, and experience the unique opportunities and vibrant lifestyle it offers.                                                                           See more about our great city here.

What We’re Looking For

  • Fluent English proficiency and conversational Japanese language skills.
  • Current residence in Japan with a valid work visa.
  • 3 years full-time or 5 years part-time teaching experience with both adults and young learners (including preschoolers) in Japan.
  • A commitment to a minimum of 18-months due to the seniority and responsibility of the role.
  • Expertise in lesson planning and the ability to deliver high-quality, engaging classes for a range of student levels and ages.
  • strong work ethic and high energy level, with the organisational skills to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to our teaching approach and the evolving needs of the English education industry.
  • BA/BS university degree (higher academic or teaching qualifications like CELTA are respected but not required).

What We're Asking For

  • Prepare and teach high-quality classes at both our main school and new branch (2–3 days based at each).
  • Perform student level checks and collaborate with the Student Support Team to ensure student progress and retention.
  • Support the School Directors and Managers with training, marketing campaigns, event planning, and staff well-being.
  • Provide feedback and guidance to students to help them achieve their language goals.

Where and When We Work

  • Classes are scheduled in the afternoons and evenings at either our main centrally located Hakata school or newly opened East branch (40min by train from main Fukuoka JR Hakata station)
  • You will teach at one branch each day - no travelling between on the same day
  • Occasional promotional open days and events (approximately 5 times per year) may require attendance outside regular hours (usually weekends).
  • Events are compensated with a day off in lieu.

This is not your average teaching job in Japan.
We’re looking for someone who is passionate about education and ready to take on a senior teaching role that makes a real difference.

If this sounds like you, don’t miss this opportunity...

To apply, submit your resume, cover letter and answer the initial evaluation questions.

To show us you’re serious about this role and that you’ve read this far, please start the first paragraph of your cover letter with: "I want to join the journey!"

We’re looking for teachers who truly want to be part of Journeys English—not just any school.

Our hiring process is thorough because we care about finding the right fit. Those who pass the initial online interview will be invited to spend a day at both our branches and to teach in-person demo lessons to our student support team for final consideration.

...apply today and join us on our journey!
