Job Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of English teaching experience
• Strong written and spoken communication skills
• Ability to provide clear, individualized feedback
• Comfortable teaching all core language skills
• Comfortable teaching language within cultural contexts
• Comfortable teaching with real-world industry expertise, such as business or specialized fields
• Valid work visa permitting employment outside public institutions
• Must currently reside in Japan
• One of the following:
  • Native-level English speaker (Japanese ability a plus)
  • Native-level Japanese speaker with advanced English

Online Teaching Environment

• Quiet, professional teaching space
• Stable internet connection and reliable computer
• Basic computer skills (online lessons, homework correction, audio/video recording)
• One-on-one online teaching experience preferred

Availability

Teachers must be able to work regularly at least five days per week.

Current demand is highest during:

• Weekends (9:00–21:50+)
• Weekday mornings (9:00–11:50)
• Weekday evenings (18:00–21:50)
• Weekday afternoons to early evenings (12:00–18:00)

Job Description

Smart English is seeking experienced English teachers for one-on-one online instruction with adult learners in Japan.

Responsibilities

• Conduct weekly 50-minute online lessons
• Support students in achieving individual language goals
• Review assigned homework and provide concise written feedback
• Adapt lesson focus or suggest additional activities when appropriate
• Scheduling classes with students

Students & Course Structure

• Students enroll on a monthly basis and continue based on satisfaction
• Most students are preparing to study, live, or work in international environments
• Some students are preparing for specific tests
• Instruction typically covers all four language skills
• Native Japanese teachers may also teach grammar- or vocabulary-focused lessons

Materials are provided, with flexibility for experienced teachers to adapt lessons as needed.

• Applicants who are not native English speakers are welcome to highlight relevant education or professional experience demonstrating advanced English proficiency.

Payment Structure

Payment is calculated per set, defined as four 50-minute lessons over four weeks, plus assigned homework review and feedback.

Monthly Contract (student renews one month at a time)

• 1st month with a new student: ¥10,000 per set
• 2nd–3rd months with the same student: ¥15,000 per set

Two-Month Contract

(Guarantees at least two consecutive months of lessons)

• 1st month with a new student: ¥10,000 per set
• 2nd month with the same student: ¥12,000 per set
• 3rd month with the same student: ¥18,000 per set

Continuation Beyond Initial Three Months

(Applies regardless of initial contract type)

• 4th–6th months with the same student: ¥18,000 per set
• 7th month onward: ¥20,000 per set

Notes

• If a student changes contract type within the first three months, the original payment structure continues to apply.
• Payment includes lesson time and assigned homework feedback.
• Homework workload is described in the Availability section above.
