Job Description

Oshaberi Eikaiwa Kyoshitsu (OEK) is a small independent community English Conversation school with a staff of 6 founded in 1987. We are located in Shimizu Ward about 30 minutes from downtown Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture with easy access to the ocean, rivers, mountains and big cities. Our school has a wonderful reputation.

We run English programs for students of all ages from parent / toddler classes through to advanced-level adults. Within each program our small classes of up to 6 students are divided into relevant language levels. We also teach some private lessons, and at local kindergartens and sometimes at community centres. Each teacher is in charge of a combination of these classes for the school year.

Our overall aim as a relevant language centre is to provide our students, to the best of our abilities,  a positive experience in learning English that will inspire them to continue wanting to learn and explore and communicate in English throughout their lives.

We are a well-resourced school. Our 2 unique schools are located near each other and are traditional Japanese houses. Teaching is floor-based with low tables and cushions. This allows flexible use of classroom space especially for our children’s classes so they are not just sitting behind their desks. Thus there is a need to be physically healthy and happy as we often get up and down off the floor. If you have health issues with your knees or back, this job is not for you. As we are a small school we also ask our teachers to help maintain and keep our schools clean and running smoothly.

Our children’s classes follow a curriculum. There is ongoing support, insight and training in language teaching techniques that benefit our Japanese students, so we are hoping to work with an educator with the willingness to take on new ideas. The class teacher decides when and how to teach each core point. This is because instead of trying to fit a child into a textbook we take into consideration their abilities, personalities and individual needs.  As a language school, along with focusing on oral communication skills we also instruct in and practice phonics, sight-words, reading and writing. We are a well resourced school. In our weekly meetings we often discuss  ideas, in how to improve and create lessons and programs. At this time we are now researching ways to improve our Junior high school programs.

Our adult’s classes have no set curriculum, as each class is unique according to the individual needs, interests and abilities of its students. Some classes are very serious while others want to also enjoy the social interactions of learning in a relaxed class. As teachers we explore communication techniques, not just teacher focused but encouraging students to interact with each other where their abilities and personalities can also shine.

JOB SUMMARY

A great opportunity for educators who are wanting to work in a creative, passionate and caring school environment, while living in beautiful Japan.

6 weeks paid holidays - 3 weeks in August, 2 weeks over the New Year, 1 week in Golden Week.

Rent is approximately 50,000 yen a month plus utilities, basically furnished including air conditioner  and  is located within easy distance of the schools so there is minimum commuting time.

We care for & support each other & our students to the best of our abilities

We value and respect each person in our team and their insights and opinions.
