Job Description
English School i2i is looking for an exceptional teacher to join our team from March 2025. Here are the details.
ABOUT US:
Worldwise’s English conversation school, i2i, founded in 2008, is a small, privately owned English conversation school in an idyllic location at the base of the Minami Alps in beautiful, nature-filled Yamanashi prefecture – home to Mt. Fuji and an hour and a half train ride from Tokyo. Our main branch is a built-to-purpose building with three classrooms and a café that serves espresso coffee, ice creams and homemade cookies and cakes. The combination of the school and café create a warm, relaxing and culturally unique environment for students, parents, teachers and staff. In December of 2020 we opened our first branch, a two classroom location that captures the same comfy feel of our home location. We put a lot of effort into making i2i a place people look forward to coming to.
We are most well known for our events and English club, Explorers. We do three large events that are open to the larger community: an Easter Egg Hunt, a Halloween Party and a Creative Christmas event. With each event we aim for an authentic cultural experience. For Easter, we hide over 1,000 eggs in the nearby local park. Our Halloween Party is one of the largest in the prefecture with over 500 joining us for trick-or-treating. For Christmas, we prepare over 400 cookies for children to decorate with icing to set out for Santa. We involve families and the community at large whenever possible.
Fourth to sixth grade students are invited to join Explorers, our English club that is loosely structured like Positive Youth Development groups (Cub Scouts, 4-H, etc.) in the U.S. We have 45-50 members each year. Explorers meet weekly to prepare for monthly “Expeditions” that create experiences we feel are integral to not only becoming English speakers but citizens of the world. Explorers allows us to do things that cannot be done during regular lessons. Past Expeditions have included: a jazz concert, paper maché crafting, bouldering, river rafting, mountain hiking, a ropes/zip lining course, a trip to an amusement park, a BBQ, a Mexican Fiesta, an overnight summer camp, pizza and pie making, a kickboxing demonstration, and a river clean up/water fight event. These events, while impactful experiences for students, also offer teachers an opportunity to bond with students. With all that we offer and do, we're not looking for just any teacher.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
We’re looking for a teacher who has experience and a passion for teaching. Someone who can be a strong role model for our students and who knows how to create an exciting and engaging classroom experience. The successful applicant will be self-motivated, positive, open-minded, energetic, hard working, and dependable. Candidates with musical, artistic, or athletic backgrounds as well as strong social skills will be given special consideration. Having advanced Japanese language ability, though not required, is also a plus.
The position involves teaching at a private English school (max. class size: 6 students) and at contracted preschools and elementary schools. The teacher will be asked to travel to different locations for teaching and therefore must have a valid Japanese or International driver's license. Transportation fees will be paid. Hours also vary but the teacher will teach between 20-25 lessons a week. i2i teaches 43 lessons a year allowing for about five weeks of vacation annually. We believe in order to be vibrant in the classroom you need ample time to recharge and enjoy the things that are important to you. We do, however, have a lot of events, as mentioned above, which teachers are expected to take part in. Our teachers often say they look forward to these, as they give them a chance to really get to know our students. And who doesn't like a trip down a river, a nice campfire or a thrilling amusement park ride?
We are a student-centered school. You will be provided with a curriculum and lesson plans but teachers also have the flexibility to tailor lessons to fit their style and students. For elementary students we have three Level Checks per year which means there is a need to cover the curriculum and stay on track. We are all working together to help our students to learn and advance. While we do use teaching materials from outside, many of our materials are made in-house. We are currently designing a six level elementary school curriculum complete with texts, cards and games. Our teachers are integral to the development and creation of these materials and we need and welcome their input.
If you feel that this is a position that would be a good fit for you, in your cover letter please tell us how and in a specific way. What experiences have prepared you for this position? What could you bring to our community that would make us better?
Worldwise is owned and operated by an American and Japanese couple.
FROM OUR CURRENT TEACHERS:

"I love the possibility of building relationships with our students and seeing them grow as individuals."
