Job Requirements

What are the MINIMUM job requirements and preferred qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working in a kindergarten, preschool, nursery school, or early childhood setting.
  • Fluent English with excellent spoken and written communication skills.
  • Currently residing in Japan with a valid visa that permits full-time employment (or eligible to obtain one).
  • Passion for working with children aged 2–6 years.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a co-teaching team.
  • Strong understanding of child safety, supervision, and safeguarding practices.
  • Basic computer skills (Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, email, online documentation).

Job Description

Position Overview

Tokyo YMCA International Kids Garden is seeking a passionate, energetic, and dedicated Homeroom Teacher to join our international kindergarten team. The successful candidate will work alongside another homeroom teacher to provide a nurturing, engaging, and English-rich learning environment where children can thrive academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.

Key Responsibilities
Classroom Teaching

  • Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate lessons in English.
  • Foster children's language, cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.
  • Create a warm, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Maintain classroom organization, routines, and positive behavior expectations.

Student Development

  • Observe and assess students' progress throughout the year.
  • Support children's independence, confidence, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all students at all times.
  • Build meaningful relationships with students and encourage a love of learning.

Planning & Assessment

  • Prepare weekly lesson plans and learning materials.
  • Maintain accurate student records and developmental observations.
  • Contribute to curriculum planning and continuous program improvement.

Parent Communication

  • Maintain professional and positive communication with families.
  • Conduct parent-teacher conferences and provide progress updates.
  • Collaborate with the Principal regarding student concerns or support plans.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with your co-homeroom teacher and teaching assistants' teachers.
  • Participate actively in staff meetings, professional development, and collaborative planning.
  • Support colleagues and contribute positively to the school community.

School Responsibilities

  • Participate in annual school events, performances, excursions, and seasonal programs.
  • Help maintain a safe, organized, and engaging learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (Education, Early Childhood Education, or a related field preferred).
  • Experience teaching in a preschool, kindergarten, nursery school, or international school setting.
  • Excellent English communication skills.
  • Passion for working with young children.
  • Strong teamwork, organization, and classroom management skills.
  • Positive attitude, flexibility, and willingness to learn.
  • Valid teaching license or Early Childhood qualification is an advantage.
