What It’s Like Staying in a Love Hotel in Japan

Curious about staying in a love hotel in Japan? These quirky, budget-friendly accommodations offer unique themes, luxury amenities, and unexpected perks. Find out what to expect, how to book, and why they might be your next go-to stay!

Love hotels in Japan come with a reputation—often seen as hush-hush, misunderstood, or just something people joke about. But in reality? Staying in a love hotel can be a super fun, budget-friendly, and surprisingly comfortable experience, whether you’re traveling as a couple or just looking for a unique place to stay. So, what’s it really like?

Way Cheaper Than a Normal Hotel

The price is probably one of the biggest advantages. Regular hotels in Japan can go for anywhere from 15,000 to 30,000 yen per night, while love hotels are usually way less expensive. We stayed in one for just 12,000 yen a night, and it had a massive TV, an entire comfy living space, a small dining area, a balcony, and even a jacuzzi—way more than what most business hotels offer. Granted, this was in the outskirts of Tokyo and was considerable cheaper, it is still more affordable than a traditional hotel considering the additional stuff.

Some hotels also have “rest” plans where you can stay for just a few hours at a much lower rate. If you just need a quick break or a nap, this is a cheap and convenient option. Another bonus? No hidden fees. Unlike business hotels, where Wi-Fi or even water might cost extra, love hotels provide complimentary toiletries, snacks, razors, and more. It’s all included!

Special Amenities You Won’t Find Elsewhere

One of the coolest parts about staying in a love hotel? The insane amenities. The one we stayed at had TWO Jacuzzis—one inside and one outside on the balcony. There was also a TV and charging port in the bathroom, so even bath time felt next-level. Another one had a massage chair, which was perfect after a long day of walking.

And let’s not forget about cosplay rentals, mood lighting, karaoke machines, and even in-room dining experiences. Some even have board games, private movie theaters, or gaming consoles available to rent!

Surprisingly Great Locations

Unlike traditional hotels, which can sometimes be inconveniently located, love hotels are usually close to train stations and city centers. We found one that even had bike rentals, making it easy to explore the area.

These hotels are often in bustling districts like Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ueno, meaning you’re right in the middle of the action. Whether you’re sightseeing, shopping, or checking out Tokyo’s nightlife, a love hotel can be a great place to crash.

Not Your Average Hotel Design

Forget boring beige walls—love hotels are designed to be fun. Many have elaborate themes, mood lighting, and stylish decor. You could find yourself in a romantic Parisian-style suite, a futuristic neon-lit room, or even a jungle-themed escape.

And no, they’re not always overly suggestive! Some are just beautifully designed, colorful, or quirky. If you’re tired of plain hotel rooms, a love hotel can be a refreshing change of pace.

Special Rooms for Extra Fun

If you’re in the mood for something extra, love hotels have got you covered. Some offer karaoke rooms, private sento (Japanese bathhouses), and even VIP suites with private pools.
One of the wildest places we stayed at had a massive spa, a private theater, and a hidden vending machine stocked with “special” items. Definitely not your average hotel setup!

How to Spot a Love Hotel

Love hotels can be a little tricky to find, but here’s what to look for:

  • Hourly rates listed outside (a big giveaway!)
  • Signs saying “adults only” on booking sites like Agoda or Booking.com
  • Some don’t allow male-only guests, but many are fine with two women staying
  • Self-check-in kiosks or discreet entrances to keep things private

If you’re booking online, searching for “couples hotels” or “romantic stay hotels” can also help you find them more easily.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

While love hotels are a fun and budget-friendly option, there are a couple of things to consider:

  • Wipe down surfaces—these hotels are usually cleaned well, but it’s always a good idea to do a quick check.
  • Skip the in-room adult items—unless they’re clearly new and packaged, it’s best to avoid them.
  • Use the vending machines—some hotels have vending machines with snacks, drinks, and even special amenities.
  • Check the rules—some places have restrictions, like no solo male guests or specific check-in procedures.
  • Book ahead if possible—weekends and peak seasons can get fully booked fast.

The Verdict: Is It Worth Staying in a Love Hotel?

Absolutely. Love hotels are way more than just a place for couples—they’re affordable, packed with unique features, and often way more comfortable than your standard business hotel.
If you’re traveling in Japan and want a quirky, fun, or even luxurious stay without breaking the bank, a love hotel is definitely worth considering. Whether you’re there for the themes, the spa, or just a cheap and comfy place to sleep, it’s an experience you won’t forget!
